Boy

Boy: 2010. Dir. Taika Waititi.

Boy is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful films ever made. The story follows young Alamein living in Waihau Bay in New Zealand with his grandmother and younger brother Rocky.

Young Alamein's father (also named Alamein) is absent after being in prison for many years. Young Alamein spends his days dreaming of his father and idolising him until one day he returns.

Taika Waititi's portrayal of an absent, terrible father is heart-breaking. Filmed in his childhood home and village, Waititi's writing and acting feels unbelievably personal. The story carries such poignant truth.

James Rolleston gives an incredible performance as Boy and perfectly shows the hurt and frustration that comes along with feeling abandoned by a parent.

The sets for this film are very simple but so effective at portraying a genuine and accurate family life. And of course, the natural scenery of Waihau Bay is immense.

This film is just a perfect depiction of family bonds and the importance of parental figures in young children's lives. I can think of no better writer and director for this than Taika. His effortless comedic style blends perfectly with his ability to break your heart and truly make you think. This is truly a masterpiece.

P.S. I didn't think I would be crying over a goat.
