Bones and All: 2022, Dir. Luca Guadagnino.
As someone who is hard to please when it comes to horror films this film blew me away. From the cast to the production design to the story itself it was stunning. It chronicles the life of a young girl Maren who has an unexplained craving for human flesh. After giving in to her cravings her father decides he can no longer protect her and leaves her to fend for herself. Her father also reveals that Maren's mother was also a cannibal. Maren, having found herself at a loose end, ventures into the world on her own. On this journey she figures out that she is not alone in this world and that there are people like her that she can trust, and people like her that she can't trust. She finds solace not within a place but within a fellow eater called Lee. As they try to navigate their troubled world together they begin to fall in love, but a dangerous force from the past has been following them and causes their demise. The ending of this film is one of the most romantic endings to a film I have ever seen, yet one of the most disturbing. The use of blood is almost decorative within this films design. Most indoor areas of this film are dark and gloomy with a muted palette, but splatterings of blood bring these muted areas to life. There is almost a lust behind the killings in this film and a sexual desire connected to the visual of blood. Luca Guadagnino always impresses with his directing, he has such an impeccable visual style and can make even the most disturbing story visually stunning. I absolutely adored this film.
