Dreamland

For my Dreamland project I began by doing some initial research into children's TV and more specifically CITV shows. I wanted to take forward into my design a sense of whimsy and fantasy while also being easy to follow and understand. Common themes I found whilst researching into these TV shows were the sense of family and community, life lessons, bright colours, easy to follow stories, comedy and eye catching visuals.

I then started to make mood board surrounding different ideas i had for what I wanted to base my 'Dreamland' on. Chosen theme- enchanted forest. I knew I wanted my character to discover some form of ‘element bending abilities’ (e.g. water, fire, air, earth) but I wasn’t sure which element to base my design around as there is so much that can be done with all. In the end I decided on ‘Earth’, so naturally my Dreamland is an enchanted forest.

The inspiration for the setting of my dreamland comes from my home in the Staffordshire moorlands. I grew up surrounded by Staffordshire woodlands and countryside so took inspiration from this for my dreamland setting.

The Story: After Arden is read her favourite bedtime story about woodland creatures and magic, she awakes to the sound of feet on her bedroom floor. She reaches to turn on her light and is surprised to see mushroom creature Ian stood in her room. He approaches her and says he needs her to come with him as one of their woodland friends has gone missing. She climbs out of bed to follow him down the stairs where, instead of the downstairs of her house, she is greeted with a tunnel of trees. They walk through and emerge into an enchanted forest, which is where their adventure begins.

I then created visuals and a Sketchup model of how I imagined Arden's bedroom to look.

I then created visuals to depict how I envision the Dreamland to look.

I also created character profiles to help myself connect with them more.

I then created a storyboard to show the sequence of events in the transition between the real world and dreamland.

I then created my technical drawing and white card model in 1:50 scale.
