The Woman King, 2022, dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood.
The Woman King was a triumph in feminist media. At its core it is filled with an overwhelming sense of female empowerment. The story follows two rival towns/tribes in Africa in the 1980s. The only people wo can save the protagonists town from the antagonists forces are a band of powerful female soldiers protected by the king. The film was visually beautiful and the settings felt so vast. It was filled with action and kept interest peaked throughout. The main plot twist during the film, while seen many times before, did not feel predictable and was revealed in a very emotive way. The film touched on many issues such as racism and the slave trade and misogyny. All of these issues were touched on in a very tasteful way without it seeming over romanticised or dramaticised. Overall this film was a very enjoyable and emotional watch and felt like a film that, at its core, was about female and black empowerment.
