Un Chien Andalou: Dir. Luis Bunuel.
This is a beautiful piece of surrealist cinema. A brief overview of the plot would not be possible as this film, to stick to its surrealist nature, does not really have one. Surrealist cinema uses absurd and shocking imagery along with Freudian dream imagery to create a warped sense of reality. This film, released in 1929, would have been unbelievably shocking to the audience of the time. One of the most famous shots of the film is one depicting a blade being drawn across a woman's eye. Whilst a modern day audience would be largely desensitised to this kind of imagery, to a 1929 audience, this is something they would have never thought they would see in their lives, let alone in a film. This film is made up of sequences of bizarre events, the difficulty to follow a plot also pushes it further into surrealism as it feels disjointed and more difficult to follow. This film was beautiful, experimental and ground-breaking.
